Apple and Microsoft on a Flash Smackdown

Was a tough week for Adobe when both Steve Jobs and Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft's general manager of Internet Explorer, both came out questioning various aspects of Flash.

Well, some disclosures are in order...Northridge is a Microsoft partner and we use a lot of their technology.  We also do a good bit of Flash development.

Both Jobs and Hachamovitch hit on the reliability, security, and performance issues of Flash.  Yes, there are some of those for sure, but there are certain types of uses for Flash which make a ton of sense.  Absolutely, as you move across various platforms, it becomes less appealing as a toolset, but again, the right tool for the right job.

While Microsoft has Silverlight out there, the hype seems to be focused on HTML 5.  Both Jobs and Microsoft are keying in on HTML 5 for various use.  Apple has the benefit of truly controlled environments with iPad, iPhone, iTouch, and iDon'tKnowWhatisNext.  Microsoft is continuing to lose some of its hold on the browser environments, so they don't get to rule with an iron fist like Jobs.

All that said...why is it that most of the hype is always around something that is not really available yet?!
